There are a few disaster situations that results in the flooding of a building, and here at JCW we have experience dealing with these types of building disaster recoveries. Not only is JCW in a position to provide both hazardous and non-hazardous cleaning services for our clients. We are also accredited for repair and maintenance services to HVAC, gas and electrical equipment and systems. Natural or plumbing floods can cause permanent damage to your building fabric and equipment. Damaged HVAC, gas and all electrical equipment that are essential to making a workplace statutorily compliant for staff and clients, will add to the down time of your business operations, if not repaired or replaced promptly. We wanted to share some recent examples of how JCW have successfully recovered two client locations that suffered a building disaster.

Our client is a national leisure chain open for business, with 24/7 access to their facilities. Lost operational hours comes at a cost and JCW’s job was to make sure this client was ready to open for the public, issue free, clean and compliant, as soon as possible.

Flood Recovery | Burst Sewage Pipe

Sewage issues at Leeds site

Our client is located beneath a block of flats and therefore has a joint drainage system. When a high build up of internal scales within the pipework having gone unnoticed, the flats’ main sewage line, which ran directly through our client’s premises as a joint drainage system, ruptured.

When contacted, JCW swiftly attended site within the emergency recovery response time that was set out within the service level agreement.

Our response

The entire premises was approximately  1.75m under sewage water, due to health and safety issues regarding sewage, closure to client’s premises were ordered. Temporary repair and containment measures were made where possible, as well as repair to faulty pipework’s which fell under the landlord’s jurisdiction and responsibility. JCW fitted a temporary bracket around the pipework to manage the leak. Subsequently a “barrier system” of containment was placed around the area, this included a double layer of sandbags to stem any further issues.

Post disaster actions

Phases:

  1. Hygienic cleaners: commenced a 2 day deep clean of the entire premises: attended the day the landlord had repaired the pipework.

  2. Removal team: attended to remove all items contaminated and damaged due to the sewage leak.

  3. Reinstatement: all new flooring, new skirting boards were fitted throughout and site re-decorated.

Flood Recovery | Burst Mains Pipe

Flood recovery at Stafford site

Our client has a standalone unit located within a retail park in Stafford.

When contacted about the burst water mains, due to the high intensity of the water leak which was directly off the main feed water exit, was found in both the gym and car park. JCW attended to our clients aid within the emergency recovery response time as set out in our service level agreement.

Our response

The premises was approximately 1 metre submerged in water, much equipment lay ruined beyond repair. JCW arrived, assessed the damage and diagnosed the issue.

The burst was caused by poorly installed drainage system and isolation issues with the water board. Our in house engineers repaired the main cold water system. Water was pumped out by our drainage team. Disaster recovery removal team then swept and cleared the property ready for our refurbishment engineers.

Post disaster actions

Phases:

  1. Hygienic cleaners: commenced a deep clean of the entire premises.

  2. Removal team: attended to remove all items contaminated and damaged due to the flood.

  3. Reinstatement: all new rubber flooring, new skirting boards were fitted throughout and new plasterboard walls erected and re-decorated.

Both incidents above were logged as Building Disaster Recovery. All works completed within 2 weeks upon receipt of client approval, and premises back open for business.

All our drainage and plumbing engineers, handy man and clean-up team are employed in house, so we have direct access to them in case of emergencies such as this one. Therefore it eliminated our requirement for any collaboration or reliance on outside agencies.
